Job Description:
Certified Special Education Teacher
Department: Special Education School
Reports To:Special Education Program Director
FLSA Status:Exempt
Classification: Full-Time
Work Hours:8am-3:30pm Monday-Friday; as needed for special events and urgent student needs
180 day calendar year plus Extended School Year

Education and Experience Required:
Missouri special education certification or provisional/temporary certification approved by DESE
Experience in special education instruction
Experience working with individuals with autism, developmental disabilities and mental health diagnosis
Experience developing behavior support plans
Experience managing maladaptive student behavior
Knowledge of IEP, curriculum development and MAP-A
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and able to effectively utilize web-based educational software
Preferred:
Background in Applied Behavior Analysis
Experience supporting alternative student communication systems
MANDT certification
First aid/CPR
Abuse/neglect training
Class E driver’s license
Level 1 medication administration
Essential Job Functions
75% of this position is spent actively engaging with students and support staff, 20% is spent designing, planning and organizing lessons and environmental supports and documents for students and 5% is spent in meetings.
Initial and ongoing assessment of student’s skills to determine strengths and areas of need
Design/implement/monitor and record progress on all components of the Individual Education Plan (IEP)
Adhere to all IEP regulations/requirements
Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities
Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one as appropriate
Maintain all records- charted and anecdotal data, progress reports, student schedules and lesson plans.
Design/implement/monitor all classroom routines, schedules, community based instruction, lesson plans, behavior support plans and data collection
Incorporate the use of communication systems, adaptive materials and equipment, sensory integration activities, and computer technology as appropriate
Maintain MANDT certification
Implement MANDT per training as needed
Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to support students displaying aggressive or self-injurious behavior.
Must be able to perform the following physical activities daily; climbing , stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, running and lifting.
Provide consistent and effective parent communication
After student dismissal, requirements include paperwork, room preparation, meetings and any other assigned end-of-the-day duties
Complete all required forms and paperwork promptly and accurately. This includes but is not limited to IEP’s, district reports, monthly progress reports, student data collection, and required personnel forms.
On time arrival. Following attendance and tardiness policy.
Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings, Town Hall meetings, conferences, Sherwood Center events and community events when approved or mandated by administration.
Maintain in-service records.
Maintain compliance with all state, federal and Sherwood Center’s teaching requirements (i.e., license and certificates)
Participate in and contribute to the development and/or improvement of educational programs. Share information and or curriculum with other classrooms when appropriate.
Direction, coordination and supervision of your classroom.
Responsible for directly supervising program staff assigned to your classroom.
Train assistants placed under your direction
Assist with special projects as assigned by supervisor
Maintain classroom furniture, supplies and curriculum in good condition. Keep up to date inventories concerning curriculum, computers, and software in assigned classroom.
