Early Literacy Coordinator

Youth Services Department (Administrative Headquarters)

This position will be open until filled.

Position Overview:

The Early Literacy Coordinator is responsible for modeling excellent customer service by coordinating community engagement and providing services that focus on early literacy for children, parents, caregivers, and library staff.   This position collaborates with staff, management and community partners as part of the Youth Services team.

This is an overtime exempt position with an annual salary of $44,428.80.

Reports to: Youth Services Manager

Essential Job Functions:

  • Understands and applies knowledge of the impact of infant, child, and adolescent learning and development stages on early literacy
  • Researches and responds to the early literacy needs of parents, caregivers, teachers, and childcare providers.
  • Serves as a community expert in early literacy and learning.
  • Successfully communicates library policies and procedures, especially those pertaining to the Youth Services Department, to internal and external customers of all ages
  • Demonstrates a knowledge and appreciation of literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites, and other electronic media that are designed for early literacy
  • In cooperation with department and/or other staff designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of early literacy programs based on community demographics, needs, and the strategic goals of the Library
  • Stays informed of current trends, emerging technologies, issues, and research in early literacy, child development, education, and allied fields
  • Proficient in use of  up-to-date computer and technology skills necessary for effective communications, presentations and research
  • Applies technological skills to provide regular training and programs for children and families, area childcare providers, teachers, community partners, and staff
  • Actively pursues avenues to promote library programs and services to underserved children and families
  • Assists in the coordination of Grow a Reader to Go program 

Non-Essential Job Functions

  • Attends and participates in a variety of off-site meetings and workshops
  • Provides ongoing collaboration and communication with other metro area youth services staff
  • Serves on a variety of early literacy and/or early childhood education committees in the metro area
  • Attendance at conferences, workshops, or online classes dealing with child development, early childhood education, and early literacy as provided and approved by the Youth Services Manager
  • Grant writing assistance

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
  • Knowledge and communication skills to train, coach, and mentor parents and caregivers
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a working personal vehicle in order to travel to various MCPL service area locations to perform essential job functions
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines while maintaining a flexible, 40 hour per week schedule
  • Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills,
  • Ability to provide creative ideas and positive input

       Education and Training:

  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited program or currently enrolled
  • Extensive knowledge of early literacy including familiarity ECRR, ECRR2, ALSC Core Competencies and other professional programs and organizations that focus on early literacy
  • Grant management  and reporting experience
  • Intermediate level competency in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

Essential Physical Abilities: to be accomplished with or without reasonable accommodation are:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the incumbent to communicate well with all constituents
  • Sufficient vision which permits the incumbent to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form
  • Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the incumbent to operate a keyboard and process library materials
  • Sufficient personal mobility which permits the incumbent to monitor, supervise, and perform assigned library operations, and to attend Library district, community, and public meetings at various locations locally, regionally and nationally. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, push and pull carts weighing up to 40 pounds, bend, stoop and reach shelving from floor level to 6 feet high
  • Sufficient tolerance for dust and mold which permits the incumbent to work with books and other library materials as well as working in older buildings
